Ok, I'm sure some of you are wondering what I decided to do with that craigslist posting. Did I respond or no? Well, the answer is sorta.
I agree with Vanessa, who has a very good example of how craigslist can be shady. Not that I planned on providing this gal with my passport info, but still, you never know.
I did, however, happen upon another listing for a kinda cheesy networking site called Girlfriends Cafe, which acts a little more like Facebook in that it includes photos and more descriptive profile information, with the emphasis of promoting gal-pal relationships.
I've used a website similar to this before and had one not-so-good experience and one really good experience that turned into a friendship (you know who you are).
In tooling around on this site, I found a profile that seemed to match the craigslist posting -- same city, same favorite activities, same age, etc. So, I contacted her in the seemingly safer confine of this site.
The result being we've exchanged a few e-mails, and she doesn't seem like a sociopath, and I've convinced her go join meetup.com and maybe attend a meetup together sometime in the near future.
So, if that goes poorly, you can expect a blogpost detailing the painful details. If it goes well, well I may refrain from blogging about it just in case this gal really does become a friend -- a friend who might get freaked out about being blogged about.

I hope it goes well!
I hope it goes well and am glad you chose a safer method. Just be careful, ya know? ;) Good luck!
Thanks!
This city is incredibly tough to find friends in (sorry to jump in late to this, but I somehow missed the first post on the topic).
I have very little advice on the topic -- I stumbled into a pretty good young adult class at my church (where I also found my very own modern gal), but it's not really gelling into a full-out social network.
Alas, most sites for guys to find guys have very little to do with friendship, so the 'net is a bit lacking for us. But I'd say see what happens with the meetup situation! As someone said earlier, it'll at least make for a good story.
And we really should make an excursion to a certain burger place at some point. :)
