I've done my best not to think about Valentine's Day, but thanks to the riptide of e-mails I've gotten from assorted retail chains promoting their Valentine's Day specials for, oh, I don't know, the PAST MONTH, it's been kind of hard not to.
I would have had little problem staying in on V-Day night had it fallen any other night of the week but Saturday, but because the Universe has a ridiculous sense of humor (although I don't always seem to find the same things funny as it does), my first V-Day in several years as a freshly minted single gal falls on a Saturday. And the combined effect of staying in on a Saturday that also happens to be Valentine's Day is just a whole lotta lame.
More on my V-Day thoughts in a future post, but let's just ask -- hypothetically, of course -- were a modern gal to ask out a modern guy whose company she enjoys for a night of G-rated fun, what kind of activities would she engage in?
I know you're all going to want to ask follow-up questions. Let me just say I don't have the answers. Discuss anyway.
From Modern Angie, who will always be my No. 1 Valentine

best vday card EVER.
Go with something on the definite male end of the spectrum. This will help keep you from all of those lovey dovey couples that make you want to gag. Action movies, basketball games, paintball, whatever.
I'd also like to note that I refuse to celebrate Valentine's Day. It is a stupid holiday designed to sell greeting cards. I boycott every year, single or not.
Doing the Valentine's Day date is always sort of flirting with danger, especially for a first/early date. I wouldn't feel a big need to do something guy-ish, though. I would say whatever strikes you as laid back is the way to go. I love Tomato Head or Sunspot for something like this as a dinner location -- fun, relaxed, but still good.
I agree -- keep it laid-back, lest the guy get the wrong idea (wait -- is this a potential date or just a friendly outing?) Either way, casual is the way to go.
That v-day card made me laugh out loud!
I share your dilemma for Valentine's Day this year. At first I was just going to pretend it wasn't happening, but instead have decided to practice self love. I am gathering my single friends, we are having dinner at the Melting Pot, then I will (if I'm not too tired) come home and have a glass of wine and nice hot bath.
I was going to organize my own QuirkyAlone party for the Dallas area, but decided this venture exceeded my current energy levels.
G rated fun on a Saturday? I say bowling or...wait for it...roller skating!
I was going to say something fun and not swamped with lovey-dovey couples like bowling or a sports event. Dinner good but somewhere casual that won't be going in for the whole Lady and the Tramp atmosphere.
Also - depending on what he's like I've had some of my favourite friendly but possibly more or maybe not nights out at the fun but slightly more kid oriented museums - like the Science museum or the Natural history museum.
Oh and if you're looking for something nice for yourself I'm giving away jewelry on my site! http://tinyurl.com/dn5rpn
I think casual - possibly going to see some sort of music would be good.
That card is awesome. Also, I think making Valentine's Day about celebrating the people you love is a nice thing too. I like to send cookies to a random, yet awesome friend, or a little unexpected love note to one of my ladies. Love gets so ignored on Valentine's Day if it isn't romantic love, and I think that's sad.
i mean that card, it gets me every time...i laugh louder and louder!
and we're in the same boat this year my dear...first one without "him" in 3 years...and i share your exact feeling about it being on a saturday...
I say, stay out of restaurants. The servers and whatnot will all just assume you are there on a date date and may make comments that you don't want to have to deal with. I vote sporting event, takeout, and/or movie rental.
I LOVE that card. I've been laughing for a good 5 minutes solid...
G-rated....Chinese food and a "man flick"? Have you seen The Dark Knight? I don't know if you have any video game systems but I love kicking butt in games like Smash Brothers or Mario Kart. Keep it light, keep it fun :)
