My dear friend Modern Angie E. is nothing if not the most fashionable person I know AND she's already seen Sex and the City the movie. So I asked her to provide the modern gals out there with some ideas of what to wear to their viewing. And she's got some awesome ideas.
Modern guys, I gather from your collective response on these SATC posts that you will not be going to see the movie and therefore do not need suggestions on what to wear. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Without further ado, Modern Angie:
Between now and mid-2009, I am in 7 weddings. Yes, really. One of the things I love about “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” is that I never have to worry about what to wear. The dress I’m clad in is hand-selected for me 6 months prior by the bride herself; therefore, all pressure is off.
I wish all events could be this easy. That is why I’m here to offer suggestions on what to wear to the movie of the summer: Sex and the City, The Movie.
This isn’t to say I’m a fashion connoisseur. Because I’m nowhere near that. But I do like to have fun with what I wear, and I do love a bargain (or the occasional splurge).
The movie is filled with sex, men, tears and laughs. It’s also filled with some really, really great clothes. Clothes that will never hang in my closet…but its fun to dream.
One thing in the movie you don’t see a lot of is jeans. The fabulous four sport loud, frilly dresses, suits and skirts with equally great shoes and accessories that define their style.
Charlotte makes a statement as 5th Ave. chic. Miranda shows being a working mom can look hot, wearing conservative lines but modern prints. Samantha is always sure there is a little va-va-voom in everything she wears (food included). And Carrie is the epitome of a top New York trendsetter. She can pull off anything.
Besides a ticket, and maybe a Cosmo in a hidden thermos, you might need the following to dress the part and make your girls’ night complete. These are some pieces that when I saw them, I thought of at least one of the characters from the show. I’ve done a range of prices…the key is to mix the expensive with the cheap!
1. A great dress. It can be simple or flashy. Bows or flowers. Think of it as your canvas for the rest of our outfit. Play like Carrie did and turn it in to something funkier with studded belt!
A Carrie-like dress from Anthropologie:
Carrie loves the big embellishments:
Add a belt to make it funkier:
2. Pick a fun top or tunic to jazz up black pants, jeans or a skirt you already have.
An affordable, yet fun top from Old Navy:
Here's a link to a colorful tunic from Forever 21.This tunic just screams Miranda. Try it with a belt:
3. Stand-out jewelry can really bring any outfit up a notch. I also really love scarves, even though it’s peaky summer-time weather. They are just different and fun…a great way to add some color, too.
Here's a funky bracelet from Urban Outfitters.
A glam ring from J.Crew: Scarves can go with just about anything:
4. Shoes. Shoes. Shoes. Manolo’s anyone? On Sex and the City, the louder the better!
A bold animal print from J. Crew:
These shoes have some great Carrie-esque flowers:5. You gotta put your ticket somewhere! Buy the real thing, get the knock off, or, if all-else fails…rent it!
This clutch will spice up any outfit:
Here's another fun one:
And a shiny bag here from Nine West.
I hope these at least gave you some ideas on thinking about the perfect outfit to wear to the perfect girly movie. We can’t all be outfitted by the world’s top designers, but by mixing and matching some key pieces, you can look just as New York as the style vixens themselves! Enjoy the show :-)

I completely agree: the designated hitter rule is ridiculous.
Did you see it? Did you love it?!
You have fabulous taste have I told you that? If not you do. I love all the dresses but for some reason my body does not like dresses.
Jay: Way to keep the estrogen levels in check around here. I do agree with you though, HATE the designated hitter.
Em: Yes and mostly! My thoughts will be coming later today.
Kristen: Thanks, but I totally can't take credit for this one. It's all my dear friend Angie's tastes.
